This poster was created for the agIdeas 2011 International Design Research Lab, which took place on 2 May 2011 as part of the agIdeas 2011 International Design Week, in Melbourne, Australia.
This poster outlines the results of a qualitative study examining the way in which digitization is impacting on working practices of communication design professionals, and the resulting implications for the preparation of design students.
For years, designers have been using various tools to come up with tangible solutions. Digital technology is a new and powerful tool that has impacted the working practices of designers in many ways. Designers now prefer to use digital tools for various visualization processes and activities. If real designers are using digital tools, then it is essential for students working in classrooms to learn and to develop skills in the use of digital technology!
The aim of this research is to explore a number of related questions, including:
- Why, how and when should students be exposed to digital technology in design?
- What is the impact of digital technology on students? Does it enhance or detract from their creativity?
- Is it practical and feasible to use the same sort of digital packages in classrooms as designers are using in the field?
These questions were explored through interviews and questionnaires. Data was gathered from design professionals, educators and design students.
The poster concludes by analyzing the findings from the data collected and coming up with recommendations for educators and students using the digital tools. It concludes by showing that there is a need for a good mix involving the use of digital tools and traditional approaches as both complement each other.
